New Year, New Home: Kickstart Your 2025 Interior Goals

As we welcome 2025, there’s no better time to focus on creating a home that truly reflects your style, supports your lifestyle, and brings you joy every day. After some time at home and the departure of the tree, you might be pondering ways to bring refreshing change into your home. I love sharing interior design ideas, templates and finding ways to help you manage all types of projects from a complete renovation, refreshing a single room, or just looking for ways to bring new details into your home, the New Year is the perfect time to set your interior design goals. Here’s how to get started:

1. Reflect on How You Use Your Space

Before diving into design ideas, take a step back and think about how your home currently works for you. Ask yourself:

  • Which rooms do you use the most?

  • Are there areas that feel underutilised or cluttered?

  • What challenges do you face in your daily routine?

  • What changes are ahead this year that will impact your home? e.g. children arriving/leaving, a change in work patterns or getting a pet.

This reflection will help you identify priorities for your 2025 design goals, ensuring your efforts meet the brief and what you need.

2. Define Your Style and Vision

Your home should be a reflection of your personality and taste. When I work with clients my job is to understand what their taste is, what they need from their home, and create a result that's better than they could imagine, it's not a case of designing my home. So if you’re the designer for your project and you're not sure where to start:

  • Create a mood board with colours, textures, and styles you love. Platforms like Pinterest or Instagram are great for gathering inspiration, but don't discount magazines and a big mount board - it's perhaps more creative and you can easily snip and annotate, even including fabric swatches like we do in my workshops

  • Refine, refine, refine - and ask, "do I love it?" With so much choice available to us, and so much inspiration, we have to be very critical, avoid being influenced and create a home we adore.

  • Think about places you’ve visited, such as hotels or restaurants, that made an impression on you. What did you like? Do you have any photos from your visit that you could add to a mood board or inspiration board?

  • Explore your wardrobe! This is an easy one, what are your go to favourite items? Often, the colours and fabrics you wear can inspire your interiors.

3. Set a Budget and Timeline

Whether you’re planning a full renovation or just updating your décor, having a clear budget is essential before you begin. To create your budget consider:

  • Setting aside a contingency fund for unexpected costs.

  • Prioritising projects that will have the biggest impact or are time-sensitive.

  • Using a notebook, or spreadsheet, list out all of the items you will need and indicate what you would be happy to spend on each item. Once you have the total, is this an amount you'd be happy with? By shopping around, sales, and exclusive discounts available to Renovation Room Members you could balance your budget differently. P.S. I just saved a member £240 today on a fixtures order 👀

  • If you'd like a detailed demonstration and templates to be able to create your budget there's help for this in the Organised Renovators Toolbox

Creating a timeline can also keep you motivated. Break your goals into manageable steps and set deadlines for each phase.

4. Maximise the January Sales

The January sales are a fantastic opportunity to snap up furniture, accessories, lighting, and flooring at discounted prices. Keep an eye out for:

  • High-quality pieces that align with your style and vision.

  • Neutral or classic items that will stand the test of time.

  • Accent pieces like cushions, throws, or art that add personality to your space.

  • The practical elements such as appliances if you're doing a kitchen, cutlery, and fluffy white towels.

5. Plan for Professional Support

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or want to ensure the best results, consider working with an interior designer. Services like my Designer for a Day or Virtual Designer for a Day can provide you with tailored advice, layouts, and a shopping plan to help bring your vision to life. Almost every renovator I work with benefits from the help for free as they make such fantastic savings - it's now become a goal to always strive and achieve that!

6. Adopt Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is more important than ever in design, and that includes not making mistakes and having to do things again, missing the knowledge to know what material is right for you, and not asking the right questions of trades people so having a disorganised programme. As you plan your projects, also consider:

  • Using eco-friendly materials and paints.

  • Repurposing or upcycling furniture.

  • Supporting local artisans and businesses.

  • Cutting down on deliveries by bulk ordering.

7. Get Organised with Project Planning

A well-planned project is a successful project. Start by:

  • Listing your design goals for each room.

  • Creating a list of tasks - if you don't already use Trello for this, you're missing a trick, also in the Organised Renovators Toolbox.

  • Using templates and tools to track progress and stay on budget. (I'll be sharing the ones I use in my upcoming webinar on project planning.)

8. Stay Inspired Throughout the Year

Interior design is a journey, not a sprint. Stay inspired by:

  • Visiting homeware stores and design exhibitions.

  • Subscribing to newsletters (like mine!) for fresh ideas and updates.

  • Following interior design accounts on social media for daily inspiration.

  • Knowing it is ok to take your time, you have twelve months and soon after this you hopefully have a budget, a project management tool with lots of lists, a timeline, a vision and the confidence to go for it!
